startling realizations i've had in the last few years:
a minority of human beings actually believe in human rights, and it's sort of a miracle that they are championed at all on earth, and is only due to tremendous amounts of hard work by visionary people over the last two centuries or so.
also, a combover, spray tan, fake-ass gold shit, a nice suit, and a trophy wife is still an effective power move against hundreds of millions of yokels
@kick see, that's a good example: the right to life. the United States has the death penalty, and people are regularly executed by the government there. in 2020. they also have a special network of no-trial-ever torture prisons (cia black sites), as well as concentration camps for child refugees where US government cops have raped thousands of children.
seems to me these are all pretty uncontroversial. and yet, here we are.
@kick even the major ones that don't seem to be very controversial, the middle-of-the-large-venn-diagram ones, like "don't torture people", "equal application of the law to everyone", "freedom of peaceful expression", et c.
there is of course a lot of debate at the edges; i'm not even talking about those. just the basics.
