fediverse.express is a very cool project. It’s basically a client for multiple cloud VPS services (DigitalOcean, Linode, etc) that runs scripts to set up a fediverse instance on whichever one you choose. The advantage of this approach is that you can pick your hosting provider, and you get shell access. The disadvantage is that you’re a customer of the VPS provider rather than of fediverse.express.

From a technical standpoint the problem of mass fediverse hosting is very difficult. Each approach has advantages and disadvantages. I’m excited to see more people experimenting with it, especially with a different approach.

@alex running "your own" instance on a giant cloud provider's vps is simply federation cosplay, except without the cool red jumpsuit

@sneak @alex The threat model of targeting VPS's for hosting Mastodon instances is very different than centralized services. Not to mention that automated surveillance of VPS's is much harder, particularly bare metal ones.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

@pete @alex bare metal and vps are two different things, by definition
