TIL that email senders can pay for sorting placement in the "social" and "promotions" tabs of gmail inbox:

@sneak I'm no marketing major, but I'd pay money *not * be put in places that aren't the primary inbox that pushes notifications

@manil people choose this when they choose gmail. nobody forces them to use gmail.
