Is there a self hostable messaging software that isn't terrible/legacy

@meeper what kind of messaging, for what kind of clients?

@sneak well just general purpose at this point, wide enough to include even irc or xmpp: direct chats and channel to the basic degree

I does too damn much and suffers because of it, the reference client and server are pretty bad for example (the client is electron I mean..)

they have made libraries and are rewriting the server but still it's to big to properly support.

consider that others have 3rd party servers and multiple clients with full feature support

@ang3l12 @meeper the defaults in the matrix server and web client do not support privacy, there is tons of phone home that has to be explicitly disabled. too many privacy-destroying footguns.
