If you're using Mastodon through Firefox, you can make the directory easier to use by installing the "Mastodon Simplified Federation" plugin:

addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef

The plugin (by @rugk) lets you follow remote accounts without having to re-enter your own account address each time.

@FediFollows @rugk apparently this doen't let me add the extension on firefox mobile. do people still use social media on non-mobile?

@sneak

Some of us still do 😁 but it's a good point. Maybe @rugk can help if there's a way to get it to work?

@FediFollows @sneak@sneak.berlin I don't see the initial post you replied to👀

@rugk

Oh weird, poster must be blocking your server or vice versa...

They asked:

"Apparently this doesn't let me add the (simplified federation) extension on firefox mobile. do people still use social media on non-mobile?"

...so, is there any chance of getting this extension onto Firefox mobile at some point? Or is there a technical barrier to this?

@FediFollows okay so feel free to direct them to github.com/rugk/mastodon-simpl to open an issue/track the status of such a feature request.

The TL;DR however is: It's not yet supported by #Firefox for Android. Only some selected add-ons are available for it, though the extension itself is technically likely compatible already: See support.mozilla.org/kb/find-an for more information.

@rugk

Okay, that's brilliant, thanks for the info! I'll copy it to them 👍

@sneak

Okay, I got a reply from the developer in this thread (they can't reply directly to you due to a server block):

yes of course

mobile users are addicts, so their representation in "number of hours per platform" is disproportionate to their share
