@purlupar it's straightforward to monitor the traffic that leaves a mac. apple can't "just phone home" because apple can't arbitrarily modify the code in macOS remotely (if automatic updates are disabled).
@surfingalot for reference, once installed, i use little snitch to block all adobe communication for the creative suite, and i only run it on one computer.
@surfingalot i don't want cloud software. i also don't use closed source networked crypto. (the only closed source crypto i regularly use and rely on is filevault, and the ciphertext doesn't leave the device.)
nintendo: "if we could legally prevent you from buying and selling our previous consoles and games we probably would. let alone emulating them."
sega: "hey kid. wanna buy some roms? we've got them for $0.99 on steam. you can just farm some trading cards and we'll give you a sonic the hedgehog. we'll give you an emulator, too, free of charge. "
@nanko i don't think she's gonna text me back anyway :/
@mauro there are no cult technologies except apple and general "free software/plaintext formats" people, as far as i can tell.
the world is so stratified into mindless apple apologists and mindless apple bashers that if you say anything positive about apple you get lumped in to the first group and if you say anything negative you get lumped into the second, and if you do both then people send you confused messages asking "but I thought you were an $X guy?!!"
@gray @arh@floss.social kinda dreading having to upgrade my imac pro and 16" intel rmbp tbh
@purlupar also i am not "a security person" or "a computer person" or "a mac person" or "a windows person" or "a linux person" or any other stupid label you think will adequately permit you to predict my behavior
@purlupar did you just assume my values?
i want performance *and* security. this is why i run an m1 mac behind a hardware firewall that blocks DNS lookups for *.apple.com and *.icloud.com and others, and blackholes 17./8.
@gray @arh@floss.social can confirm catalina+intel shows "Processor Name". I don't have any big sur/intel here as yet to determine if they renamed it to "Chip" across the board.
@purlupar also, the m1 air is the best laptop available for purchase on earth today, and anyone who can't see that simply isn't aware of the state of the art
