"VLU can be disabled by disabling Siri Suggestions in System Settings > Siri & Spotlight, as previously explained."

The API request I observed via Finder QuickLook happened with Siri Suggestions *disabled*. So this response article has some issues.

@unixviking from their article:

"Images viewed in apps supporting VLU have neural hashes computed, and those are uploaded to Apple’s servers to perform look up and return its results to the user, as previously detailed."

So information about the contents of the image is sent to Apple via API. Cool.

@unixviking

they wrote:

"This claim boils down to Apple automatically being sent identifiers of images that a user has simply ‘browsed in the Finder’ without that user’s consent or awareness."

I never claimed that. Tell them to read my article again.

@mayaisloading in german the cat's human is called a "can opener" and in korean they are referred to as "butler"s.

@joeo10 @tux0r i'll take that bet. define sooner and a dollar amount. macs will remain usable without an apple id for a long time.

My favorite fun fact about the US military is that some old Navy FLTSATCOM satellites have been abused by Brazilians as free CB radio relays, e.g. by truckers to chat on the road.

These vintage 1980s satellites are nothing more than analog linear amplifiers without any authentication. It's open to everyone as long as long you can point an antenna at it, with a RF mixer at the right frequency. The military can't do anything. This audio recording is absolutely hilarious:

To many of us it was clear that the Twitter files revealed a more systemic problem, and this breaking news goes to show just that.

is there a foss clone of report-uri.com that i can selfhost?

@didek @joeo10 i wish you foss zealots would consider for a moment why people like me still run macOS when linux exists

but as Canada Bill Jones said, "It's immoral to let a sucker keep his money."

@tux0r @joeo10 i'm just saying that the worst apple laptop is 2x+ as good as any PC laptop, something a lot of hacker types like to ignore. this is why i funded the development that resulted in both OpenBSD and Linux being able to boot on it.

i could be running gpu-accelerated asahi on this box right now but it doesn't support a lot of important stuff yet (like multiple monitors IIRC).

@FrankEndrullat is it? i don't think it is. german law requires that anyone getting a phone number in germany has to show ID, as far as i know.

@tux0r @joeo10 not in a way that can use any of the hardware acceleration, or run resolve (afaik)

@tux0r @joeo10 oh it also has really really really good speakers, like 3x better than any other laptop speakers ever. it's really hard to find any fault whatsoever with this piece of hardware.

@tux0r @joeo10 people who believe that (and there are many of them) have never had or used a truly great laptop. it's not even like, remotely fuckin' close. if the best thinkpad ever made is a 5, any macbook air from the last 3 years is a 14, and that's apple's lowest end machine. my macbook pro has 8tb of flash, 10 cpu cores, 64gb ram, 3456x2234@254ppi, HDR, hardware accelerated HEVC/x265 encode and decode, 21 hours of battery life, and can run 4 displays. it's 2.2kg. enjoy your lenovo

@tux0r @joeo10 there are precisely 0 laptops that run OpenBSD that aren't super shitty

imagine believing russia would lose a land war

@andthisismrspeacock day 21: oh, look, another ragey and cringey death threat from a transwoman programmer with an anime profile pic. that's the fifth time this week
