@mikael i like it when my nle generates the proxies (vs the camera) because then i can just load in the originals, tell it to make proxies, and go to bed. i don't need to pair them, or know where they are, or whatever.

@mikael it does but i don't know yet how to manage hooking up low res proxies to the main media without a big hassle. i just upgraded to resolve studio and it does x265 10bit.

@mikael also i don't know anything about DNxHR but i would imagine that for equivalent quality to h265 it's gotta be at least 50-100% higher bitrate, which means more disk thrashing (i have 18 cores and a bigass gpu, i'd rather reduce disk i/o)

@mikael resolve studio is only $300, and it's a one-time thing not a fucking shitass forever subscription like the assfuck creative cloud, so i just bought it. while i'm waiting for my license key scratch card to arrive from ebay, i have a cracked version that also works great.

@surfingalot they're printed on scratch-off cards and sold as physical items and you buy them from dealers, not blackmagic. they're a hardware company, remember?

been ignoring sony's silly warning "A corresponding environment is required for playback of movies recorded in XAVC HS 4:2:2 10bit.", but it turns out that the free version of resolve won't even recognize them as video files.

@surfingalot apparently only the airgap-required studios really go for the dongle, most people go the activation key route (which is also out of stock most places, but i got one coming on ebay).

in the meantime i have a crack for 16.2.2 that works well

nobody has the davinci resolve studio usb dongle in stock, required for editing 10bit h265 (the free version won't do it). ugh

netlimiter 4 pro is a reasonable lulu/little snitch substitute on windows. you have to go in and change the blocker policy to 'ask' for it to do the popups though, it took me a few minutes to figure it out.

ha! if you uninstall all of the microsoft store crap from win10, and use powershell to install the WSL ubuntu20.04 .appx bundle, the windows licensing manager service will attempt to connect to microsoft when you launch it. if you block the connection, it won't run.

@evgena i need a dedicated linux laptop for a specific purpose and i have several macs and pixelbooks here but the pixelbook i tried to reflash didn't take, and i don't feel like fighting an uphill battle to get linux working on mac hw
