the fact that win10 actually refuses to let you shut off the computer *right now* without installing the updates first is perhaps one of the most user-hostile and consent-violating things i've ever seen in software. instead i hard power off, potentially corrupting the filesystem. fuck yourself, microsoft, and i hope i never learn the names of the devs who implemented this malware.

i wish to hire a contract sysadmin to help me deploy and maintain my infrastructure. part time, project-to-project.

if you are experienced with unix, only use key based ssh/mosh auth, like documenting things, are fluent with git, and are okay using a separate dedicated machine i provide, please inquire to sneak@sneak.berlin with your cv/relevant experience and rates.

we have a standard network discovery (beacon packets) for wifi, why not for wired lans?

i really really really wish we had something standard like CDP for the whole industry, so that an ethernet card can tell me what the name and port number and vlan of the managed switch its connected to is. the fact that we can send a gigabyte per second through the port (yes i have a 10gbit lan don't @ me) but don't know which fucking port it's plugged in to without crawling on the floor and tracing cables is.... insane

can i just give a shoutout to VLC for asking on first launch if it's okay to connect to the network to check for updates, and if it's okay to connect to the network to download media metadata? this is polite, consensual, awesome software.

google is really stepping up AMP. so many of the results i click on are served from the google domain now. it's fucking disgusting. is there a browser for android i can use to rewrite these to the real URL?

i'm glad more people are starting to wise up to what an asshole Eich is.

There's a damn good reason that he got BTFO of Mozilla.

I wish persona 5 had a 'learn japanese' mode. They would display english, japanese and literal word translations of each word along with pronunciation. On a 4k screen you have enough resolution for it. I noticed I'm starting to pick up words and such.

why isn't there a chrome extension that lets me follow people on my own server when i click the follow button on a remote instance without that stupid redirect dialog that asks me to dox my account-to-IP mapping to the remote instance?

despite buying close to five figures of sony optical glass a week or two ago with no problems whatsoever, amazon decided to freeze my account today because i bought an XPS

i guess their ML is pretty smart; if you told me a year ago my amazon account would be used to buy a dell laptop i'd have assumed it compromised as well

i think it's a pretty amazing achievement in terms of peace that the americans that are freaked out by the capitol riot are treating it as a full blown armed insurrection.

they have no idea what a battle is, what constitutes war, or what a real attack on a city or position entails.

their response is laughable, but ultimately it's a real achievement for humans that so many people are out of touch with actual battle, actual war, actual combat, that smashing windows and stealing laptops counts.

sort of a bummer that you can't use a different account for youtube on an android device without adding the account systemwide, and you can't log out of one of the systemwide accounts in the youtube app and use it logged-out without deleting the systemwide app from the whole device.

it's almost like google wants to know exactly what you're up to at all times

interesting that on android when you have systemwide location disabled, apps can still prompt you for location permission for that one specific app. (i assume clicking it doesn't give them a location, as systemwide location is off?)

setting up an android phone for the first time in a long while.

all four of:

- mullvad
- signal
- standard notes
- protonmail

had easily locatable/downloadable APKs, to avoid having to use a google account at all.

pretty amazing!

be large and corporate, or google will warn your userbase that you're maybe a shady open source data-stealing, ski-mask wearing criminal.

If you put a Google Fi sim card in a freshly wiped android phone, it autocompletes the Google sign-in page. I am intensely curious if this is a sim card serial to PII disclosure bug like the one weev discovered all those years ago with ATT/iPad

iPadOS 14.3 claims that it now reports air quality via Maps and Siri for locations in "China mainland".

Part of Project Dragonfly, Google's CCP-compliant (censored) search product, they had to report air quality lies from government servers in Beijing.

Does anyone know if Apple is now doing this?
