privacy issues aside, iOS is getting worse. there are a lot of features for features' sake, and lots of bloat. some of it is amazing (eg continuity, for those that use icloud), and the new camera OCR, but most stuff added since ios7 isn't that great.

evolution didn't make giraffes tall. it made giraffes a bell curve, normal distribution of various heights.

then for thousands of years, millions and millions of the unlucky short ones starved to death, emaciated ribs poking out, before they could reproduce. gradually the center of the bell curve shifted right.

1600/day are dying of covid in the usa, while vaccines that almost entirely prevent death are widely available for free.

it's the same for intelligence. it takes a long time.

in 2019 the us military once paid out $131 for killing the wrong person.

if you or i do it, we get a life sentence.

Museums are finding it nearly impossible to post imagery containing artistic nudity on social media because their posts keep getting deleted and accounts suspended or banned, so Vienna's museums opened a page on OnlyFans.

TikTok closed the Alberta museum account for showing an obscured woman's breast.

Facebook ruled the 25,000 year old Venus of Willendorf figurine as pornographic and removed the post.

drinking almondmilk keto shakes triggers three of the same symptoms as covid in me. antigen rapid test says no covid, though.

ios15 lets you disable AMBER alerts without disabling emergency/safety alerts. that's good.

you can also silence emergency/safety alerts in silent mode (normally they burst through and still make a sound even if your phone is silent).

glad to see these settings.

pairing airpods pro to a mac makes avconferenced make connections to some apple subdomain. blocking avconferenced from making any outbound connections does not seem to degrade functionality.

yes, analytics are off.

it's crazy that in one generation we went from most people's private communications in the usa not being monitored and logged by the government to very nearly 100% of people's private communications being monitored and logged by the government.

that's not enough though, so apple is putting in clientside scanning for the government, too.

sitting here tearing my hair out reviewing iam instance role json line by line by line and it turns out i had the item arn wrong the whole time

the terminal that ships with current linux on chromeos is also broken, hence needing cargo to compile alacritty

aws cloud shell only permits a not-configurable 1GB for ~. This is bunk as even a gopath with all the default go development tools and a normal set of vim plugins will fill this up and render it unusable. :(

"cargo install alacritty" segfaults on whatever version of cargo presently comes with the debian inside of chromeos on a pixelbook.

how does one enable offline/local dictation on an iphone 12 pro running ios15? all of the enable options have network disclaimers.

for the record, i like both the comedic techniques of kernel-of-truth-but-mostly-exaggerated-so-still-funny (cf louie's "of course but maybe" bit) as well as the say-the-most-absurd-untrue-thing-possible-but-deliver-it-straight-for-a-beat thing (again cf louie's cinema classics jews/rape stuff). people tend to conflate the two but they are not the same. i suspect chappelle is trying for the former and ends up punching down; i haven't seen the bit yet though so this is speculation.

dave chappelle is complaining about cancel culture right as both of netflix's co-ceos explicitly confirmed that they are not cancelling him. (netflix is, i assume, his primary source of income.)

for the record, i think freedom of association is one of the best and most powerful tools for reshaping society and making it better, which is why i am pro-cancel-culture, pro-boycott, pro-vaccine-mandate, et c. you should be free to say "no, that sucks, i won't do business with you" at all times.

if you’re going to hang three records on your wall, they should be the man machine, tour de france, and human after all

i think i have an essay about kraftwerk inside of me. computerliebe is about experiencing human alienation by technology-mediated social interaction, then using technology to solve the problem. both the man machine and tour de france are concept albums about the same concept.
