i like this blog post a lot.
the latest iOS enables automatic updates for you even if you've previously opted out. it tells you this during setup, but has no opt out. it's on you to remember at the end of setup that you have to go into settings and disable Apple's remote code execution vulnerability they've placed on your device.
@Alexis the one golden moment from that otherwise meh movie is the "tell her who i am" scene
@duncansan what i'm doing in this instance is:
- no icloud, no siri, no location services
- DoH to nextdns via mobile profile (see apple.nextdns.io)
- no sim card
- nextdns blocking of *.apple.com and *.icloud.com following installation of a small set of apps
- use only via a vpn travel router, that speaks wireguard (and has LTE uplink)
it's probably my last iphone
@protonmail you're probably going to lose me to native ios mail.app and fastmail in the interim, if i don't end up just running my own mailserver out of frustration.
@wowaname ventoy is the thing you want
i did a thing today with John Koetsier:
@surfingalot not unless they put in usb-c
@protonmail yeah but can we sort by unread?
@duponin japan lives up to it though, at least tokyo
@tealturtle then my productive output for the same amount of time goes down, and i compromise my practical effectiveness and professional abilities for ideology, a sacrifice that precise no one should be asked to make.
tesla understands this: it can't just be the best electric car, it has to be the best car, or humans will continue burning gasoline until the last human on earth dies.
