What are the best mastodon instances? I'm looking something between freespeechextremist (defederated by most instances) and mastodon.technology (arbitrary virtue-signalling sjw admin). ideally not some anime/furry den with a usercount that you can index on one hand...

why has pgp.mit.edu been broken/slow/unresponsive for a year straight?

still over here waiting for chromeos to allow me to pass my usb-c yubikey through to the linux vm so I can use it for ssh/pgp. (it only supports passing android devices through right now, so you can develop apps that benefit the platform owned by the company that makes chromeos). it's been "coming soon" for like a year

turning on push alerts for new videos on the CDC youtube channel has shown me just how fucking bad government policies/communications around emergencies are. these people simply have no idea how to be provide authoritative information, don't seem to know about how to properly manage finite mindshare/attention.

i use youtube 1.5x playback speed for fast talkers, and 2.0x playback speed for slow talkers. extremely slow talkers are slow even on 2.0x playback. it would be cool if youtube could leverage its caption/speech recognition stuff to allow me to set a playback rate based on words per minute.

ubuntu 20.04 focal lts is out today. the desktop version is still ugly as fuck, still gnome, still ships with the firefox spyware browser.

i take personal responsibility but i still hold ubuntu (and its use of gnome) as a major contributing factor to my being unaware for so long that there are actually non-turdlike free software DEs available now.

Quick reminder that if you work for FAANG, you are complicit in your employers misdeeds.

Tax evasion, union busting, systemic erosion of privacy, lobbying and regulatory capture... even if you don't work on this stuff, you contribute to a system of capital which funds this stuff. You drink coffee and have lunch with peole who are doing this stuff. And you still deposit your paycheck every month.

Whatever your annual salary, it costs about 1.5x that to employ you, with benefits. The company is doing this because they believe that by employing you, they stand to earn /more/ than that. In effect, even if you don't directly work on this stuff, by working there at all you are giving $employer 6 figures worth of more money to spend on unethical business endevours.

Don't work for FAANG. I will hold you accountable for the deeds of your employer.

@sir
This is relatively old (before Intel wiped out 10 years of "performance improvements" in the x86 CPUs, so probably a little more instructions currently) gist.github.com/zloster/bcf82d
IMO illustrates the "complexity" part well.
My guess is that the actual work should be around 100 CPU instructions (initialise a buffer, put the desired string there, prepare the call to the display subroutine/library, make the call). The difference to 688471 is actually A LOT...

it’s official: government officials are allowed to say shit on twitter that would get you, a lowly pleb, instantly banned. two sets of rules!

the biggest surprise to me as a new circumstantial bread baker is how different the various types of flour are. i always figured because they were all white and powdery that they must be mostly the same, maybe 5-10% in variance, like drive through mass produced lattes from different chains or something. turns out they are VASTLY different and do totally different things.

i think perhaps doing an instancewide mute may be appropriate if their spam continues. i don't want to deprive anyone who happens to be a user of their scammy service of the ability to easily read/follow me if they wish.

it seems that the gab.com instance has an army of spambots that fav/boost random recent statuses on known instances. this is becoming a legitimate argument to impose some restrictions on unfiltered federation. spam/fake user actions (lying for marketing's sake) is a different class than wrongthink (the usual excuse given for banning gab).

The problem with the Powerwash being required to switch into developer mode on a Pixelbook is that you cannot switch to having root and then introspect the integrity of the system (to compare against a previous version, or to do static analysis, et c).

Powerwash to go back into secure mode, I totally understand. But it makes it nigh-impossible to do closed-case forensics on a device if you have to nuke it to get root.

why is the YouTube TV app allowed in the Apple TV app store if it has abusive (unskippable) ads? isn't that an App Store TOS violation?
